howdy!

I've been on a roll the last few days -- I've penciled 21 pages in 3 days! and thumb'd quite a few, too! I'm penciling probably my favorite scene in the whole book right now, which has probably helped. I call it the Beautiful Shots of Carpeting scene and I hope I can draw it to live up to it's name.

Penciled page labeled 35. A disembodied pair of arms is holding a piece of carpet tile, and there are four drawings of the arms placing the tile on the floor. It reads like an instruction manual for installing carpet. Each tile acts as a panel, and inside Cramsey is shown paying close attention to the disembodied voice/arms instructing them. In the final panel, we see it is an anthro snake (Johnson.)Page 36. This page is laid out like tiles, and the panels are in a checkerboard pattern. They show Cramsey picking up a piece of carpet and -- with their tongue sticking out and brows furrowed in concentration -- they lay it in place on the floor. They sit back, beaming with excitement that they did it! Behind them, Johnson is shown frowning.Page 38. Cramsey is struggling to pull a piece of carpet off the floor. Sound effects read 'shhhtick' as it peels off slowly, then 'shhTUCK' as the rest peels off very quickly. Then 'pop' it comes off and Cramsey falls backward, saying 'oof'Pages 45 and 46 are shown next to each other. Both are full page drawings. 45 is an up close shot of Cramsey's hand, showing them holding a carpet knife with the blade just poking out. They're fiddling with it. 46 is a birds eye view of the floor being worked on, half of it covered with carpet tiling and the other half uncovered, showing garbage stuck to the floor. Johnson is on his knees, working on laying the carpet, with a big stack of tile next to him.Page 48. Another full page drawing, from a very intense, close to the floor angle. It shows more of the uncovered floor, with drawings of arrows on it and a used band-aid. In the background, Cramsey sits with their legs tucked under them, looking moodily off into the distance next to a stack of carpet tile.

The story is partly inspired by my experience working for my college's facilities management while I was a student. I worked with the school's mason/flooring guy, and did a lot of carpeting for a couple summers. All the carpeting we did was carpet tile and I both loved and hated doing it, so this scene is kind of a love/hate letter to carpeting. I'm having a lot of fun using tiling in the layouts, and laying out these full page drawings that (I hope) will be beautiful and full of really intricate textural detail once I get to inks.

In thumb news, I just started on the final couple scenes, starting with the, i guess, climax of the story. For most of the book, the tension is simmering and our protag Cramsey is trying their best to avoid confronting it, but in this scene it all explodes. I've not really drawn a really intense argument before, so I'm rereading a few comics that I feel have really well done arguments in them for inspiration!!

That's all! See ya next week!
