Some playlist cover distractions

Posted by bzedan on Jun 12, 2023

This June's playlist is a bunch of queer music, and songs that please me to interpret as queer. Although often the playlist cover is the last thing I do, after a playlist has its more or less final form, this time around I had ideas for it and have done a couple already that I can't decide between. But there's still a lot of month left! So maybe I'll make more. But here are four I've done so far.

A very metal painted illustration of a demon standing behind a sharp, jagged mountain range, whipping a rainbow at a priest in the foreground, floundering in water and wrapped up in more strands of rainbow. The demon has Garfield's face.

I've always loved the cover for Dio's Holy Diver (a painting by Randy Berrett), and it just felt right to modify for the playlist cover.

A blue-tinted image of a person lying on their back on a scattered bed of feathers. They are wearing a silvery jumpsuit with huge winged shoulder pieces and a bloodstain spreads over their heart. The face of the person is Garfield, who is wearing glam makup

Velvet Goldmine is one of those movies for me that is infinitely frustrating for often being out of print or otherwise difficult to share with others due to availability. It's one of those Important Queer Movies for me, and the visuals are: fabulous. It's funny watching the trailer (well one of the trailers, anyway) as an adult and thinking, "how did fourteen-year-old me realise this was too gay for me to get away with renting?" Anyway: add Garf.

An image of a person wearing a white suit with orange polkadots on it. They are wearing a short curly pink wig and also have polkadots on their face (which is Garfield's). The edges of the image fade out into halftone.

Even if you don't know who Leigh Bowery is, it's very possible that you've seen his work or work inspired by Bowery's work (there's a whole music video scene in Velvet Goldmine that references it, even). He's a household favourite artist and, if you can find The Legend of Leigh Bowery to watch, I recommend it.

A person, centered in the lower third of the image, shown from the chest up against a red background. They are wearing a black cowboy hat (that kitty ears poke through), a white t-shirt, and a black mask with thick fringe that hides their lower face fully. Even so, it is clear the face is Garfield's.

This one is just to amuse me. I was scrolling through songs that are on the playlist so far, looking at album covers for inspiration, and was like "well, this needs a Garf."

Anyway, more to do this month, but this has been a fun distraction.
