It's the crossover you never knew you needed: We, South Philly Action Coalition (SPAC), are teaming up with South Philly Autonomous Cinema (also SPAC), to screen a legendary labor film and raise money for South Philly community work. Join us on Sunday, March 22 at Nikki Lopez (304 South Street in Philly) to watch Salt of the Earth with us!

Buy your ticket here — it costs $12 and includes a hot dog, and we'll be selling popcorn and our Smash ICE stickers (similar to, but not exactly the same as, our Smash ICE t-shirts) during the event. All ticket, popcorn, and sticker proceeds will go toward South Philly community work.

Salt of the Earth, which was blacklisted during the Red Scare and kept inaccessible for years, tells the fictional yet all-too-real story of a Mexican-American miners' strike in New Mexico. The film advocates for labor rights and feminism, leading authorities at the time of its release to allege that it was communist propaganda.

Moreover, since Salt of the Earth was written by Michael Wilson, directed by Herbert J. Biberman, and produced by Paul Jarrico — all of whom were among the alleged comunists of the Hollywood Ten, the first systematic Hollywood blacklist — it was one of the earliest films created independently of the Hollywood system.

We and the "other" SPAC have very intentionally chosen to screen Salt of the Earth during Women's History Month since it fearlessly highlights labor, immigrant workers, and women’s leadership. If you're eager to see it, we're starting the screening at 1:30 pm, with doors at 1 pm. See you there!
