update january 2026

hello everyone! today i released "things that didn't suck in 2025" which is exactly what it says on the tin. it's the first new thing on my main channel in almost exactly a year, which is not a gap i intend to repeat any time soon.

i just want to take a minute to share what i've been up to and talk about the future a bit.

first, did you know i have a second channel? it's mostly for stream highlights and random little experiments/jokes, like everyone else with a second channel. here's one about generating sinkdogs using youtube's AI features. here's one about why you should care about sports. here's every use of the word "fuck" in the miniseries version of dead ringers. wow!

my partner and i were on our friend kate's deltarune podcast survey program to talk about the future of doctor who. it's a bonus episode so you have to pay five bucks for a listen. or you can DM me and maybe i'll send you the episode for free. we'll be guesting again in a couple weeks to talk about the war between the land and the sea. you should listen to survey program. it's good.

i'm also on letterboxd! i keep track of all the movies i watch there, and sometimes write reviews. lately i've been curating a list about the return of sword & sorcery to contemporary cinema. click through and you'll see that this is basically an episodic essay. i wouldn't say it's "finished" because there's been a lot of movies suggested to me that i haven't watched yet, but there's a lot there regardless. the idea's got enough legs i'm honestly considering turning it into a full video. however IF that happens, it won't be happening for quite some time. so you know. go read the thing and give me validation now instead of waiting for an indeterminate future that may never come.

speaking of the future! we are gonna be talking about a lot of stuff in the coming months. the first compilation of my ghostwatch 2025 vlogs is now FINISHED. i will be uploading that for supporter-only viewing sometime in the next week or two, with the public release coming in february. when precisely in february will depend on the status of the other vlog compilations, as i want to release them on a regular schedule. the final tally is gonna be at least 4, maybe 5 hourlong videos. wowza, i sure can talk a lot!

and then there is "what would a better youtube look like," another stream compilation that will probably end up on the main channel anyway since it is primarily scripted.

the common thread with all of these projects, including "things that didn't suck in 2025," is that they're generally low effort, unscripted affairs, much closer to "content" than what i typically produce. this is not the new normal! with the exception of today's video, each of these projects has been at some stage of "almost done" for months now, and i've just been too tired/burnt out/dispirited to finish them. even though the whole point was that they were supposed to be easier to finish!

so, what's made the difference? did i get new ADHD meds? did i have a creative epiphany that solved all my mental blocks? did i make a deal with the devil???

nope. what changed is i'm getting someone to help with editing. it's still too early to make any specific announcements, but i just got back the first tentative fruits of this endeavor and i'm beyond excited. a big part of why i was so unproductive last year was simply that i knew i needed to find an editor and just had no idea where to start. my luck with collaborations has not always been the best, and there's certain technical hurdles and missing knowledge on my part that were just too daunting for me to deal with at the time. but after a series of lucky encounters, i think that phase is behind me. already it's completely changed my mental math for the video essay production pipeline. knowing that i don't have to do everything by myself, and that i can depend on other people to pick up my slack, has taken so much more weight off my shoulders than i ever imagined. i honestly feel quite foolish for waiting so long to make the jump.

again, too early to be making promises. a lot can happen between now and tomorrow. but i have at least a satiating portion of confidence that these lower-effort projects in the near term will lay the groundwork for more high-effort projects down the line. there are still a lot of kinks to work out in my process, but i've always done my best work when i wasn't flying solo.

and that's it for now! thanks as always for your patience and support. i look forward to having more for you soon :)

take care of yourselves.
