Hi there!
It's nice to see you, have you done something new with your hair? Your glasses? Well, you're looking good, and this eblast is looking DIFFERENT, so lets get into that:
I am no longer going to be sending my monthly theater roundups + essays out via Substack eblast, they are now coming from Comradery, a worker cooperative where creators own and control the platform equally. With a focus on sustainable growth guided by the creators themselves, this feels like less of a Company who sends out my little eblasts and more like a Community who has come together to provide these services for likeminded artists and creators. I have a voice when it comes to company-wide, internal decisions. It doesn't mean that everything I think will happen, but that's a lot better than say, Patreon, who will just send out a new fee structure with no communication with the people who use the platform.
On a personal level, I'm trying to be responsible how I integrate my art and money. There are plenty of ways that artists have found to translate their work into a few dollars, but I wanted to make sure that if I was monetizing the Thing I Do To Make My Soul Feel Good, it was in a way I felt confident about. Divesting from big tech can seem impossible (I'm looking at you, Spotify, your days are numbered) but Comradery came to my attention at just the right time, and seems like a great fit.
Now I know what you're thinking, "August, you've been talking a lot about money, but I haven't given you a dime!" Very astute. I'm happy to announce that I've added a $5 Support tier - support a living playwright, while they're still alive!
Paid supporters will get to see pieces I'm working on well before it hits the public. I'll also be launching a feedback service in the next couple of months. Do you have a first draft you want feedback on? Have a draft where something isn't working but you're not sure what? Let me take a look! Paid subscribers will get early-access to this, in that it will only be offered to them while I gauge interest and ability, and will get priority access to it once it goes live for everyone.
I think that's everything! Thank you for bearing with as I switch platforms, something that unfortunately happens a lot in the digital landscape and creates the same amount of stress in me as moving apartments! You can subscribe to either the same monthly newsletter or the new support tier here.
Thank you so much for your continued interest in me/my ramblings/my work, it means the world.
What is this, an email? Why am I signing off?
xoxo August
